The towns and rural landscapes of Italy hold a special appeal for me. Building on previous trips, in 2019, as part of a year's sabbatical from the University of Memphis, I spent three months in Italy, painting in and around the hill town of Todi, Umbria, as well as the ruins of ancient Rome. There I concentrated on an exploration of the genius loci, the unique sense of place that makes a location special and memorable.
